High Energy Accelerator Research Organization

The High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (高エネルギー加速器研究機構 Kō Enerugī Kasokuki Kenkyū Kikō), known as KEK and established in 1997, is a national organization whose purpose is to operate the largest particle physics laboratory in Japan (situated in Tsukuba, Ibaraki prefecture). The term “KEK” is also used to refer to the laboratory itself, which employs approximately 900 employees. KEK’s main function is to provide the particle accelerators and other infrastructure needed for high-energy physics, material science, structural biology, radiation science, computing science, nuclear transmutation and so on.

The Magnetic Materials Group in the Institute of Materials Structure Science at KEK is a leading group working in the field of magnetic structure analysis of magnetic materials using large-scale facilities such as synchrotron radiation and neutron. The group’s main subject is magnetisation reversal mechanisms and coercivity mechanisms of magnetic materials from the viewpoints of both synchrotron and neutron experiments and large-scale magnetic simulation.

KEK will lead high-level structural studies, involving high-resolution X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction and scattering, using the synchrotron radiation and neutron facility of Photon Factory (synchrotron radiation) and J-PARC/MLF (neutron) in Japan. Neutron scattering and particularly polarised small angle neutron scattering (SANS) and polarised neutron reflectivity (PNR) enable us to determine the degree of antiferromagnetic order in the materials – and in particular the Neel temperature at which the AF order appears.

The group specialises in magnetic structure analysis and has world-class facilities such as x-ray microscope (BL-16) and high-precision x-ray diffraction system (PF-AR NE7) at the Photon Factory. Also the group has a close access to x-ray magnetic circular dichrosim (XMCD) at BL-16 of Photon Factory and super high-resolution neutron powder diffraction (superHRPD), polarised neutron small angle scattering (TAIKAN), polarised neutron reflectivity (SHARAKU), and high-resolution neutron inelastic scattering (HRC) at J-PARC.

The group has a priority to access above beamlines and has long-term beamtimes of 40 days per year for both synchrotron radiation and neutron, that can be used in this project. The group also has a material fabrication and magnetic measurement system at KEK. For example, a state-of-the-art focused ion beam system SII SMI-3200, Lakeshore Model 7410 vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and two Oxford superconducting magnets with the field of 5 T and 9 T. KEK also has supercomputing systems with their computing power exceed 1 PFlops, and the group has approx. 5000 hours of computing time for magnetics simulation and data analysis and can be used for this project.
