The University of York (informally York University), is a research-intensive plate glass university located in the city of York, England. Established in 1963, the campus university has expanded to more than thirty departments and centres, covering a wide range of subjects. York has been named the 7th best university under 50 years old in the world (and 1st within the UK), building a “reputation to rival Oxford and Cambridge”. The Magnetic Materials Research Group in the Physics and Electronics Departments at UoY is probably Britain’s largest group working in the field of advanced nano-magnetism. The group has specialised in the field of spintronics, magnetic modelling and magnetisation reversal studies in complex materials. The Spintronics and Nanodevice Lab in the Department of Electronics at UoY investigate novel materials, new devices and fabrication techniques for spintronics – a rapidly expanding field of microelectronics and nanoelectronics.

University of Bielefeld

The University of Bielefeld was designed and has evolved as a strong research university with a focused spectrum of cross-disciplinary research fields in the natural sciences and technology. Major research areas in the Thin Films and Physics of Nanostructures Group are Ultrathin films, Nano-magnetism, Spintronics and Biophysics. The main goals of our work are the basic understanding of magnetism and spin-dependent electronic transport in thin films and nanostructures, the development of optimized magneto- and spin-electronic devices and new applications of magnetic devices in sensors, information and biotechnology.

The Magnetic Materials Laboratory managed by Prof. Takanashi in Institute for Materials Research at TOH is one of the largest research groups working on nano-magnetism and spintronics in Japan. The group has a lot of film fabrication systems (four ultra-high-vacuum (UHV) compatible magnetron sputtering systems and four MBE systems) and magnetic and electric properties measurement facilities (SQUID magnetometer, vibrating sample magnetometer, MOKE and low-temperature and high-frequency compatible prober systems).

The Magnetic Materials Group in the Institute of Materials Structure Science at KEK is a leading group working in the field of magnetic structure analysis of magnetic materials using large-scale facilities such as synchrotron radiation and neutron. The group’s main subject is magnetisation reversal mechanisms and coercivity mechanisms of magnetic materials from the viewpoints of both synchrotron and neutron experiments and large-scale magnetic simulation.
